Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 soon, joins a young group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, placing last in the division but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with striking out often, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
International Pedigree
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The following day in the title match against the USA, he slugged a game-tying shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
