Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An new acronym came to light a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are still being committed. Authorities disputes these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
