Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
