Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Objections from Iran and Egypt
Plans for Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and External Festivities
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the stadium.
“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities beyond the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.
Cultural Context Behind the Objections
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. While its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s proud history of championing equality.
- A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the occasion.
- Organizers have pledged to ensuring all fans feel welcome in the city during the tournament.
The region hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” the statement concluded.
