Study Reveals UK Government Officials Held Meetings With Fossil Fuel Lobbyists In 500 Sessions During Initial Year of Power

Based on new research, government ministers met with representatives from the oil and gas sector over 500 times in their opening year in power – equivalent to double per weekday.

Significant Increase Compared to Former Government

The analysis found that petroleum sector advocates were in attendance at 48% more official discussions under the current government's first year versus the previous year.

Ministerial Justification

Officials justified the engagements, asserting that officials conducted discussions with a wide range of agents from "power industry, unions and community groups to propel our sustainable energy superpower mission".

Rising Worries About Industry Influence

However, the results have caused alarm among observers about the extent of the oil and gas sector's influence over government at a moment when ministers are working to lower bills and move to a more sustainable energy infrastructure.

Key Findings

The analysis, which draws from the government's public documentation of government discussions, additionally revealed:

  • Representatives at the Energy and Climate Department held meetings with petroleum sector advocates 274 times, with sector representatives attending almost a quarter of sessions.

  • The climate official met with oil industry representatives 250 times – with 33% of all his meetings featuring corporate delegates.

  • During the equivalent duration department ministers met with worker group agents 61 times.

  • Several leading fossil fuel companies met with officials 100 times combined.

  • Oil industry representatives attended almost every ministerial discussion about the excess profits charge, a temporary levy against the "unprecedented revenues" of offshore petroleum firms.

Party Statements

An ecological representative commented: "Instead of considering experts, communities affected by flooding, or families desperate to guarantee a safe future for their future generations, this government is prioritising industry advocates and earnings for oil and gas giants."

Official Denial

Officials insisted the results were "inaccurate", saying several of the corporations included also had sustainable power initiatives and that these were often the primary subject of the conversations.

"Our primary objective is a just, orderly and thriving transition in the marine area in accordance with our environmental and regulatory requirements, and we are working with the sector to safeguard present and coming generations of good jobs."

Broader Context

Various prominent petroleum industry giants have been condemned for reducing their environmental investments in the past few years amid a international resistance against ecological initiatives.

An activist coordinator from an ecological advocacy project commented: "Ministers pledged a people-focused leadership, but that isn't equivalent to yielding to businesses profiting out of ecological disaster. It's time to stop cosying up to climate-damaging entities and put people first."
