This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
