What's Inside that Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the past of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.
Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science
The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he struggles with the control of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
